BMW i4 Gets a Power and Range Boost for 2026

14

BMW recently unveiled updated specifications for its i4 electric vehicle lineup in the United States, bringing notable improvements in both power and driving range. These enhancements offer a compelling proposition for those considering an electric alternative to traditional luxury cars.

Key Updates Across the i4 Lineup

The most significant change comes from the implementation of silicon carbide (SiC) inverters, borrowed from BMW’s newer i5 models. These inverters lead to improved efficiency, which directly translates to increased range for all i4 models.

Enhanced Efficiency and Range

  • i4 eDrive40: Equipped with 18-inch wheels, this entry-level model now achieves a range of up to 333 miles (536 km), a 15-mile (24 km) increase over the previous year. Even with 19-inch wheels, the range is still impressive at 307 miles (494 km), 12 miles (19 km) better than before.
  • Why this matters: Greater range alleviates “range anxiety,” a common concern for EV drivers. The improvements reflect a broader trend in the automotive industry toward more efficient electric powertrains, driven by advancements in battery technology and power electronics.
  • i4 xDrive40: The dual-motor all-wheel-drive version also benefits from the SiC inverter upgrades, providing a similar improvement in range compared to the eDrive40.

The Upgraded i4 M60: Performance Meets Efficiency

The previous i4 M50 model has been superseded by the more powerful i4 M60. This upgrade isn’t just about power; it’s about combining performance with enhanced efficiency.

  • Significant Power Increase: The i4 M60 now produces 510 hp (380 kW / 517 PS) at startup, a substantial 41 hp (31 kW / 42 PS) increase. Selecting the Sport Boost mode unlocks an even more impressive 593 hp (442 kW / 601 PS).
  • Blistering Acceleration: This power boost allows the i4 M60 to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in a mere 3.6 seconds. Notably, this is half a second faster than the standard M3 and nearly matches the performance of the M3 Competition xDrive. This demonstrates that electric vehicles are increasingly competitive with high-performance gasoline-powered cars.
  • Improved Range: Despite the considerable increase in power, the i4 M60 retains impressive efficiency. Models with 19-inch wheels offer a range of 278 miles (447 km), an 11-mile (18 km) improvement over the previous model. Even with 20-inch wheels, the range is a still-respectable 232 miles (373 km), an increase of 5 miles (8 km).

Additional Features and Styling Tweaks

Beyond the core powertrain updates, BMW has introduced a few other refinements:

  • Standard Tire Kit: All i4 models now come standard with a Seal & Drive Tire Kit, offering convenience and a temporary fix for minor punctures.
  • Drive Recorder: The Parking Assistant Professional package now includes a Drive Recorder, allowing drivers to capture footage of parking maneuvers and other events.
  • Optional Glass Controls: Customers can now opt for stylish glass controls on all i4 models.
  • Styling Enhancements: The Shadowline package for the eDrive40 and xDrive40 now includes black mirror caps and M Sport brakes with blue calipers, also available as standalone options.

Pricing and Availability

The 2026 BMW i4 will enter production in November. Pricing starts at:

  • $57,900 for the i4 eDrive40
  • $62,300 for the i4 xDrive40
  • $70,700 for the range-topping i4 M60

The updated i4 lineup represents a compelling package of enhanced performance, greater range, and added convenience, solidifying BMW’s commitment to the electric vehicle market. The combination of increased power and efficiency—particularly in the M60 model—demonstrates the rapidly evolving capabilities of electric powertrains and their ability to compete with traditional performance cars.
