The 2027 Mercedes GLB Gets Three Screens, Seven Seats, and a Modern Makeover

Mercedes-Benz is pushing hard to keep its compact car lineup competitive against rivals like BMW, even if that means holding onto a niche offering: the seven-seat SUV. The second-generation GLB aims to prove there’s still a market for this type of vehicle in the face of shrinking popularity for traditional wagons and station wagons. This revamped version retains its boxy look but undergoes significant changes inside.

First unveiled on December 8th, the redesigned GLB arrives in the US for the 2027 model year boasting a modern cabin borrowed heavily from the recent CLA sedan and CLA Shooting Brake. The centerpiece is an optional “MBUX Superscreen” — essentially three screens seamlessly integrated into the dashboard. This setup includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster flanked by dual 14-inch touchscreens, offering what Mercedes calls a “fully digital” driving experience. While base models will come without the passenger-side display, those opting for this premium tech get a layout that prioritizes digital interactions over traditional physical buttons.

Beyond the screens, the GLB echoes the CLA’s design language with a floating center console and several key features like a head-up display and Burmester sound system. Mercedes also offers the option of a panoramic glass roof mimicking the “starry sky” effect seen in its more luxurious models. The roof section can even transition from transparent to opaque within milliseconds using controls on the infotainment system — adding another layer of customization for passengers.

The GLB’s trump card against rivals like BMW is still practical space. While Mercedes hasn’t revealed precise dimensions, they emphasize a noticeable increase in rear legroom compared to its predecessor. This spaciousness comes partly from a nearly flat roofline that provides extra headroom across both the first and second rows – an often overlooked benefit for families. Additionally, unlike some of its rivals, the GLB offers a truly optional third row, adding two more seats for passengers who need them most. When not in use, these rearmost seats fold down into the floor to maximize cargo capacity.

The 2027 GLB is expected to share much of its powertrain lineup with the CLA, including mild-hybrid and fully electric versions alongside gasoline options. A turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic will likely be offered in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. Electric models will get rear-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive available on request.

Mercedes’ ongoing overhaul of its compact lineup continues beyond the GLB. Expect refreshed versions of the GLA and a smaller, more rugged G-Class to follow in the coming years. A fully electric version of the A-Class hatchback is also rumored for release sometime down the road.

The 2027 Mercedes GLB aims to be a compelling blend of practicality, luxury, and tech-forward features – key elements that could help it stand out in a crowded market segment
