The revived Ford Escort RS will offer a modern, high-performance engine option: a 2.1-liter four-cylinder unit producing 325 horsepower and capable of reaching a 10,000 rpm redline. This engine, dubbed the “Ten-K” by manufacturer Boreham Motorworks, is designed to capture the spirit of the original Escort RS1600’s legendary Cosworth BDA engine while leveraging modern engineering.
Modern Engineering, Classic Inspiration
The Ten-K engine shares the belt-driven, four-valve-per-cylinder layout of its predecessor but significantly increases displacement from 1.6 liters to 2.1 liters. Boreham has incorporated advanced materials and manufacturing techniques to achieve both high output and reduced weight. Key components, including the crankshaft, connecting rods, subframe, dry sump, and cam cover, are machined from billet steel for maximum strength and durability.
Formula 1-Inspired Cylinder Head
The cylinder head design borrows heavily from Formula 1 engine technology, optimized for efficient intake and exhaust gas flow. This ensures maximum volumetric efficiency and contributes to the engine’s high-revving capabilities.
Lightweight Construction
To further reduce weight, Boreham utilizes 3D-printed castings for the engine block. This allows for thinner wall thicknesses compared to conventional engine construction without sacrificing structural integrity. The engine also features individual throttle bodies, replicating the distinctive growl of the classic racing Escorts.
Engineering Expertise
Development of the Ten-K was led by Simon Goodliff, formerly Ford’s chief engineer, and Laine Martin, previously manager of Ford engine calibration and control systems. Their combined experience ensures the engine delivers both performance and reliability.
Engine Options
Boreham’s new Escort RS will offer two engine choices. The Ten-K provides a high-performance option, while a second engine will be an upgraded version of the original Cosworth powerplant, producing 182 horsepower.
