This competitive pricing is partly due to the vehicle qualifying for the full £3,750 government Electric Car Grant (ECG). The new Leaf is positioned to challenge rivals like the Kia EV3 and Volkswagen ID.3, particularly in terms of range and value.

Competitive Range and Pricing

While cheaper entry-level versions of competitors exist, many fall short on range: the new Leaf delivers nearly 400 miles on a single charge. This makes it a standout choice for drivers prioritizing long distances between charges. The ECG further lowers the barrier to entry, undercutting other key rivals such as the Kia EV3, Hyundai Kona Electric, and Cupra Born.

Trim Levels and Features

The Leaf is available in four trims: Engage, Engage+, Advance, and Evolve. Even the base Engage model comes well-equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, dual 12.3-inch displays, wireless smartphone integration, and adaptive cruise control. Higher trims add larger screens, heated seats, panoramic sunroofs, premium upholstery, and even massaging front seats in the top-spec Evolve.

Acceleration from 0-62mph takes 7.6 seconds, and charging from 20% to 80% can be completed in under 30 minutes. Later, a smaller 52kWh battery version will offer around 270 miles of range, with a slightly slower 8.6-second 0-62mph time.

Design and Aerodynamics

Nissan’s designers focused on efficiency, resulting in a sleek, aerodynamic profile with a drag coefficient of just 0.25. The sloping roofline and Kamm-tail rear end contribute to this, maximizing range. The design also nods to Nissan’s heritage, with subtle references to classic models like the 300ZX.

Interior and Practicality

The interior is modern, dominated by dual 12.3-inch or 14.3-inch screens (depending on trim). Physical controls remain for key functions, ensuring usability. Rear passenger space is generous, with a flat floor and ample headroom. The 437-liter boot is larger than the previous Leaf, though competitors may offer more upright cargo areas.

Government Incentives and Wider Impact

The new Leaf is one of only a few EVs currently eligible for the full £3,750 ECG, alongside models from Ford, Citroen, and others. Since the grant’s introduction in July, it has helped over 35,000 drivers switch to electric. Nissan’s entire EV lineup, including the Micra and Ariya, also benefits from government incentives.
