SAIC Motor Targets 2027 for Solid-State Battery Production

SAIC Motor, one of China’s largest automakers, is preparing to launch mass production of all-solid-state batteries by 2027. A key partnership with Qingtao Power has resulted in the full commissioning of a production line in Anting, with initial sample cells expected by the end of this year. Prototype vehicles will follow in 2026, paving the way for commercial deliveries the following year.

Next-Generation Battery Performance

SAIC has set ambitious technical goals for the new solid-state chemistry. The company aims for an energy density exceeding 400 Wh/kg (gravimetric) and 820 Wh/L (volumetric), with individual cells capable of holding over 75 Ah. These specifications represent a significant leap forward from conventional lithium-ion batteries, promising longer ranges and faster charging times for electric vehicles.

Enhanced Safety Features

Safety testing indicates the solid-state cells exhibit superior thermal stability. SAIC reports that the cells passed rigorous nail-penetration tests and remained stable at 200°C without combustion or explosion. Low-temperature performance is also high, retaining over 90% of capacity in extreme conditions. These results suggest a substantial reduction in fire risk compared to liquid electrolyte batteries.

Long-Term Challenges

While the progress is notable, industry analysts caution that sample production does not guarantee commercial viability. Scaling to mass manufacturing, controlling costs, and ensuring long-term reliability in real-world conditions remain major hurdles. The availability of raw materials and the stability of the supply chain will also be critical factors in determining success.

SAIC’s commitment to solid-state batteries represents a strategic push toward next-generation electric vehicle technology. However, achieving mass production at a competitive price will require overcoming significant engineering and logistical challenges. The company’s timeline suggests a calculated, yet aggressive, approach to disrupting the rapidly evolving battery market.
