Audi Overhauls Digital Interfaces and Driving Dynamics for 2026 Models

8

Audi is set to introduce significant upgrades to its digital interfaces and vehicle dynamics across several key models starting with the 2026 model year. These changes, affecting both electric and combustion-engine vehicles like the A5, A6 e-tron, Q5, and Q6 e-tron, will include hardware and software enhancements to the infotainment system, steering wheel controls, and even driving modes.

New User Interface Features

The most visible changes will be to the vehicle’s screens. Audi is streamlining menu structures and updating graphics for improved usability. Notably, the popular driver-side map view—first popularized by Audi’s Virtual Cockpit—is making a return. This feature allows drivers to see navigation directly in their line of sight without taking their eyes off the road.

Better smartphone integration is another key improvement. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will now be fully integrated into both the driver’s display and an optional passenger screen, enhancing connectivity for all occupants. Audi is also introducing customizable background colors, addressing complaints about the readability of current black interfaces.

Upgraded Controls and AI Assistance

Audi is also improving the physical controls on the steering wheel, re-introducing tactile buttons for easier operation. The voice assistant has been upgraded with new AI-powered software, promising more natural interactions and expanded functionality. This means drivers can expect more intuitive and accurate voice commands.

Efficiency Gains for Electric Models

Electric models, including the A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron, will receive a software update recalibrating the regenerative braking system. This allows for full one-pedal driving, bringing the vehicle to a complete stop using only regenerative braking. Not only does this improve efficiency by harvesting more energy, but it also makes stopping smoother, particularly when using adaptive cruise control.

Performance Enhancements for S Models

High-performance S5 and S6 e-tron models will gain a new “Dynamic Plus” drive mode. This mode tweaks the Quattro all-wheel drive system and optional Quattro Sport differential for optimized handling. The S5 will also feature a unique central rev-counter on the driver’s display when this mode is activated, providing a more engaging driving experience.

Unfortunately, these upgrades are not retroactive. Current owners will not be able to retrofit these changes to their existing vehicles. The new features will be standard on 2026 models, which will be available for order starting in December. This move highlights Audi’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive technology, but also creates a clear incentive for customers to upgrade to the latest generation of vehicles.
