Toyota has unveiled a refreshed version of the Corolla sedan for the Chinese market, featuring updated styling and a roomier cabin. However, Australian buyers will not see this model; instead, they will receive a completely new generation of the Corolla in 2027.
China’s New Look: Styling and Space
The updated Corolla, sold through Toyota’s joint venture with FAW in China, boasts Toyota’s latest “hammerhead” front-end design. This aggressive styling is already appearing on other global Toyota models like the RAV4, C-HR, and Camry.
Beyond aesthetics, the Chinese-market Corolla receives a 50mm wheelbase extension, increasing overall length by 75mm and notably improving passenger space. The interior has also been revised with a new center console, repositioned controls, and a larger 12.9-inch touchscreen.
Powertrain Options in China
The Chinese Corolla will be available with two engine options: a 2.0-liter petrol engine and a 1.8-liter hybrid powertrain using a nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery. These configurations cater to local market demands while diverging from the powertrain strategy planned for Australia.
Australia’s Next-Gen Corolla: Hybrid, Electric, and Beyond
Australian-bound Corollas will be sourced from Japan and represent the next-generation model revealed at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. This version will include hybrid, electric, and potentially hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains. Exact specifications for Australia remain unconfirmed.
Regional Differences and the GR Corolla
Toyota frequently tailors Corolla designs to specific markets. For instance, European Corollas feature unique front- and rear-end styling compared to Australian models. Toyota also sells alternate versions in China under the Levin and Allion brands.
Notably, a refreshed GR Corolla hatch – the performance variant – is scheduled for release in Australian showrooms in early 2026.
The key takeaway is that Toyota is diverging its Corolla strategy based on regional markets. The Chinese facelift is designed for local preferences, while Australia will receive a completely new generation model with advanced powertrain options. This approach highlights the complexities of global automotive production and the need for manufacturers to adapt to varying consumer demands.
