Smart has unexpectedly launched the #6, its first-ever saloon car, in China. This model aims to compete directly with established rivals like the BMW 3 Series, Tesla Model 3, and BYD Seal. If released in the UK, it could shake up the electric vehicle market.
Key Specifications and Dimensions
The Smart #6 is the largest vehicle ever produced by the brand, exceeding the dimensions of the BMW 3 Series in length, width, and wheelbase. It measures 4,906mm long, 1,922mm wide, and 1,508mm tall, with a 2,926mm wheelbase. This suggests increased passenger space compared to its competitors.
The exterior design incorporates smooth lines, a subtly sculpted bonnet, and flowing headlights. Unique features include a LiDAR sensor integrated into the windscreen and an active rear spoiler. A black bar connecting the headlights likely houses sensors for advanced driver-assistance systems.
Hybrid and Electric Powertrains
The model initially unveiled is a plug-in hybrid, utilizing the same ‘Super Hybrid’ drivetrain as the Smart #5 EHD. This system combines a 1.5-liter petrol engine (capable of 72mpg post-battery depletion) with a three-speed DHT automatic transmission and an electric motor, producing a combined 429bhp.
However, Smart has confirmed no current plans to bring this hybrid version to the UK or Europe. An all-electric variant is expected to follow, though no specific timeline has been announced. The hybrid version boasts a pure-electric range of up to 177 miles and a combined range of 1,125 miles (based on China’s CLTC test cycle, which may differ from European WLTP standards).
Interior and Technology
The interior remains largely unseen, but is expected to mirror the tech-centric design of the Smart #5, including a massive 13-inch central touchscreen, a 10.25-inch driver’s display, and a potential passenger display. The inclusion of LiDAR and advanced sensors suggests the vehicle will feature high-level autonomous driving capabilities.
Smart claims its hybrid setup offers superior stability, smoothness, fuel efficiency, and range compared to conventional plug-in hybrids. A high-performance Brabus version is also anticipated.
The launch of the Smart #6 signals a significant expansion for the brand, positioning it as a direct competitor in the high-performance electric saloon segment. While its availability in European markets remains uncertain, the vehicle’s impressive specifications and innovative hybrid technology suggest it could become a major player if released internationally.
