Skoda is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) lineup with the Epiq, a compact SUV designed to undercut competitors in price. This move comes as the Volkswagen Group seeks to challenge Chinese and Korean EV makers like BYD and Kia in the rapidly growing entry-level EV segment. The Epiq will first launch in Europe in late 2026, with availability in Australia expected around 2027.
The Strategy Behind Skoda’s New EV
Skoda already offers the Enyaq and Elroq EVs, but the Epiq represents a shift toward more affordable electric mobility. The automotive market is seeing increased pressure to reduce EV costs, particularly as competition from Asian manufacturers intensifies. By using more accessible technology and streamlined production, Skoda aims to make electric vehicles accessible to a wider consumer base.
Pricing and Battery Options
The Epiq is expected to be priced similarly to the gasoline-powered Skoda Kamiq, starting around $29,990 AUD before on-road costs. The vehicle will come in at least three variants, including a base model (Epiq 35) with a smaller battery and lower power output to keep costs down. The Epiq 35 will use LFP battery technology and an 85kW motor, while higher trims (like the Epiq 55, tested in Portugal) will offer more range and power. All models will feature a standard 13-inch infotainment touchscreen.
Interior Design and Features
Skoda’s design philosophy remains focused on practicality, with a blend of modern technology and functional design. The Epiq will retain physical buttons for key controls, such as climate and window adjustments, in response to driver feedback. It features a 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and higher-end trims will offer synthetic leather upholstery made from recycled materials. The cabin design prioritizes usability, with ample storage space and standard features like wireless phone charging.
Driving Experience and Performance
The Epiq is built on Volkswagen Group’s MEB+ platform, and the ride quality is solid, thanks to the suspension. While the base Epiq 35 has reduced power (85kW), higher variants offer brisk acceleration. The Epiq’s handling is light and agile, making it well-suited for city driving.
Safety and Running Costs
The Epiq will come with advanced driver-assistance systems, including Travel Assist 3.0, which offers features such as adaptive lane assist and a 360-degree camera system. Skoda’s standard seven-year, unlimited-kilometer warranty will apply, ensuring long-term reliability.
The Bigger Picture
The Epiq’s launch is part of a broader trend among automakers to lower the entry barrier for EVs. The success of this model will depend on how effectively Skoda can balance affordability with acceptable performance and features. By offering a competitive price point, Skoda hopes to capture a significant share of the growing entry-level EV market, where price sensitivity is high.
The Epiq represents a pivotal move for Skoda, as it targets a new segment of buyers who might otherwise be priced out of the EV market. Its success could redefine Skoda’s brand image and cement its position in the competitive EV landscape.
