BYD is preparing to release an upgraded version of its Sealion 06 plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in early 2026, featuring a more powerful motor, a longer electric range, and optional LiDAR technology. This move underscores BYD’s continued expansion of high-range PHEV SUVs in the competitive Chinese automotive market.
Performance and Efficiency Improvements
The new DM-i variant, designated BYD6480AMHEV12, boasts a 175 kW peak drive motor paired with a 1.5L BYD472QC engine. Crucially, the updated model achieves an estimated 220 km (137 miles) of pure-electric range under CLTC testing standards – a substantial improvement for daily commutes and reducing reliance on gasoline. Combined fuel consumption is rated at just 0.63 L/100 km, with combined electric energy consumption at 17.1 kWh/100 km.
These figures demonstrate BYD’s commitment to hybrid efficiency. The Sealion 06 DM-i’s charge-depleting fuel consumption is reported at 4.6 L/100 km, and CO₂ emissions are remarkably low at 14.93 g/km.
Advanced Driver Assistance and Market Context
The upgraded Sealion 06 DM-i will offer BYD’s “God’s Eye C” driver-assistance system as standard, with LiDAR available as an optional upgrade. This enhancement will improve the vehicle’s perception capabilities, particularly in complex urban environments.
The Sealion 06 has already proven successful, exceeding 100,000 units sold in its first three months. This quick adoption positions it as a key player in the Chinese SUV PHEV segment, filling the gap left by the million-unit Song PLUS. BYD is strategically launching five 220 km DM PHEV variants alongside the Song Ultra EV in early 2026, showcasing a clear product roadmap.
Strategic Implications
BYD’s decision to extend the electric range of its PHEV models reflects a broader industry trend. Consumers are increasingly seeking vehicles that offer both the convenience of gasoline engines and the benefits of electric driving. The modest projected price increase (under 5,000 yuan) ensures the Sealion 06 remains competitive while delivering substantial improvements in efficiency and range.
The Sealion 06 DM-i PHEV 220 km variant solidifies BYD’s position as a leader in China’s mid-size SUV segment by balancing cost, efficiency, and advanced driver-assist technologies.
This launch reinforces BYD’s aggressive growth strategy in the new-energy vehicle (NEV) market, and its ability to rapidly adapt to consumer demand.
