Lexus LX Recall: Fire Risk Linked to Transmission Fault

13

Lexus has issued a recall for certain LX500d and LX600 models due to a critical defect in the 10-speed automatic transmission that could lead to vehicle fires. The issue stems from a failure mode in the transmission’s linear solenoids, which control gear shifts.

The Problem Explained

Under specific conditions, a faulty solenoid can prevent the transmission control unit (ECT-ECU) from communicating a fault to the engine control unit (ECU). This can cause the transmission to over-rev in certain gears, leading to severe damage. The consequences include:

  • Loss of power: The vehicle may suddenly lose motive power while driving at high speeds.
  • Fluid leaks: Transmission fluid can leak onto hot exhaust components, creating a fire hazard.
  • Fire risk: The combination of overheating and flammable fluids significantly increases the chance of a vehicle fire.

Crucially, there are no warning signs before this failure occurs. Owners will not receive any alerts or experience unusual symptoms until the problem manifests. Lexus is urging all affected owners to seek immediate inspection.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

The recall impacts a total of 589 vehicles:

  • 325 LX500d models
  • 264 LX600 models

All affected vehicles were manufactured between 2024 and 2025. Lexus Australia has provided a Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) list to help owners determine if their vehicle is included in the recall.

How to Resolve the Issue

Lexus dealerships will reprogram the Transmission ECT-ECU software free of charge. The process takes approximately 30 minutes, though dealerships may require longer depending on their workload. Owners should contact their local Lexus dealer to schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

For additional assistance, the Lexus Customer Assistance Centre is available at 1800 023 009 during weekdays from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM AEDT.

This recall underscores the importance of proactive vehicle maintenance and highlights a critical safety concern. Owners of affected Lexus LX models should act promptly to ensure their vehicle is safe to drive.
