Ferrari to Enhance Purosangue SUV with Upgraded V12 Engine

2

Ferrari is preparing a higher-performance variant of its Purosangue SUV, retaining the naturally aspirated V12 engine while refining handling and potentially boosting output. This update aligns with Ferrari’s broader strategy: to maintain internal combustion engine (ICE) offerings even as the industry shifts toward electrification. Production is slated for the second half of the year, making it one of five new models Ferrari plans to release in 2026.

V12 Powerhouse Remains Central

The current Purosangue features a 6.5-liter V12 engine producing 715 horsepower. However, Ferrari has demonstrated the potential for greater power in other models—such as the 12Cilindri (819 hp) and the Daytona SP3 (up to 829 hp). While specific power increases for the updated Purosangue haven’t been confirmed, the possibility remains. This move is notable given industry trends toward hybrid or fully electric SUVs, as Ferrari chooses to double down on its signature engine.

Production Limits and Market Strategy

Ferrari will continue limiting Purosangue production to 20% of its annual output, in contrast to competitors like Lamborghini (Urus), Aston Martin (DBX), Rolls-Royce (Cullinan), and Bentley (Bentayga) which do not impose such restrictions. This scarcity is deliberate, preserving the exclusivity of the brand despite high demand. The “base” Purosangue already sells for over $400,000 in the US, with an upgraded version easily exceeding $500,000.

Future Engine Plans

Ferrari anticipates that 40% of its models will remain pure ICE by 2030, with plug-in hybrids accounting for another 40%. The remaining 20% will be electric. The company has also confirmed it will continue to improve its V6, V8, and V12 engines to meet new emissions standards (Euro 7 compliance). This commitment to ICE engines is significant, as Ferrari has found ways to keep these powertrains viable while competitors accelerate EV development.

Ferrari’s decision to enhance the Purosangue with an updated V12 underscores its unique position in the luxury SUV market: one where scarcity and performance trump volume. The brand’s ability to command premium pricing ensures profitability even without maximizing production.
