DS 3 Revival: New Retro-Styled City Car on the Horizon

DS Automobiles is shifting its strategy toward more affordable, compact models, with a next-generation DS 3 supermini set to arrive in the “near future.” This move follows the recent launch of the DS 8 and DS 7 SUVs, marking a return to the brand’s roots in smaller, city-focused vehicles.

A Return to Form

The current DS 3 has been on sale for seven years, and CEO Xavier Peugeot has strongly indicated that its successor is a high priority. The company aims to challenge rivals like the Renault 5 and Mini Cooper with a premium city car that balances iconic design with commercial viability.

Peugeot suggests a concrete preview of the new model could come within months, hinting at a deliberate shift toward smaller vehicles after focusing on larger SUVs. “Having launched No8, then No4 and now No7, we’ve launched quite big-sized cars – so you understand where our thoughts are going to continue this development,” he explained.

Design Inspiration: A Nod to the Past

The next DS 3 is expected to draw heavily from the original model launched in 2010, which was a key part of Citroën’s initial DS sub-brand. The first-generation DS 3 was notably lower and sportier in its design, a contrast to the current SUV-focused iteration.

DS designer Thierry Metroz emphasized a desire to capture the spirit of the Gen1 while avoiding simple retro styling. “We want to take inspiration from the Gen1, but in a very futuristic way,” Metroz stated, adding that they aim to keep strong design elements from the original.

Strategic Alignment with Peugeot

The DS 3 revival aligns with a broader strategy across the Stellantis group. Peugeot, DS’s sister brand, is also embracing retro inspiration for its next-generation 208 supermini, channeling the spirit of the iconic 1980s 205. Both models are expected to share underlying technology, maximizing efficiency and development costs.

Timing and Next Steps

The Paris motor show in October is a likely venue for a concept debut, although Peugeot has not confirmed this. The focus on smaller, more accessible vehicles signals a strategic realignment for DS, aiming to capture a wider market segment while retaining its premium brand identity.

The revival of the DS 3 marks a calculated move toward profitability and market share, leveraging nostalgia and modern design to compete effectively in the crowded city car segment.
