First Look: BMW’s All-Electric M3 Spotted in Undisguised Form

The highly anticipated electric BMW M3 has been sighted in testing, just after the reveal of its platform-sharing BMW i3 sedan. Set to arrive in showrooms by 2027, this marks a pivotal shift for the iconic M3 lineage.

Aggressive Styling and Quad-Motor Power

Captured in photos circulating on enthusiast forums, the upcoming EV showcases a bold front fascia. It features enlarged kidney grilles seamlessly integrated with headlight designs, along with aggressively flared wheel arches and a pronounced hood scoop. These design cues align with earlier camouflaged prototypes, confirming BMW’s commitment to an aggressive aesthetic even in the electric era.

Under the hood (or rather, underneath the floor), the M3 EV will pack a quad-motor setup delivering over 1000 horsepower (746kW). This will provide all-wheel-drive performance, a substantial leap from the current petrol-powered M3 CS Touring, which offers 405kW and 650Nm from its twin-turbo inline-six, with a starting price of $253,900 AUD.

Neue Klasse Platform and Cutting-Edge Tech

The electric M3 is built on BMW’s next-generation “Neue Klasse” platform, the same architecture underpinning the recently unveiled i3 sedan. This platform is notable for its advanced technology, including a battery exceeding 100kWh capacity, BMW’s ‘Heart of Joy’ central computing system, and the latest AI-powered iDrive interface.

The EV will also feature 800V electrical architecture, enabling DC fast charging at speeds up to 400kW. This technology promises to exceed the Tesla Model 3 Long Range’s range, with BMW claiming a potential WLTP range of up to 900km.

Coexistence of ICE and Electric

BMW has confirmed that both internal combustion and electric versions of the next-generation M3 will be available in 2027, including Touring (wagon) variants. The petrol-powered M3 will continue with an updated version of the current inline-six engine, adapted to meet upcoming Euro 7 emissions standards.

This dual-track approach demonstrates BMW’s commitment to serving a broad customer base while navigating tightening emissions regulations and evolving market demands. It’s a significant engineering undertaking, as BMW prepares for a future where both gasoline and electric powertrains will coexist.

The launch of the electric M3 represents a bold step toward electrification without abandoning the performance heritage that defines the brand. BMW is hedging its bets, ensuring both ICE and EV enthusiasts have a high-performance option in the coming years.
