BMW is set to unveil its revamped Alpina lineup on May 15th at the prestigious Concorso d’Elegaza at Villa d’Este, marking a new chapter for the once-independent, now in-house luxury brand.
The Alpina Shift: From Family Hands to BMW Control
For decades, Alpina operated as a highly respected but separate tuning house, known for its ultra-exclusive, high-performance versions of BMW’s flagship models – primarily the 7 Series and X7. Recently, the brand transitioned fully under BMW’s ownership, ending the Bovensiepen family’s stewardship. This move consolidates Alpina’s legacy within BMW while allowing it to evolve independently.
What to Expect: Luxury, Speed, and Comfort First
The first Alpina models of this new era will be based on the existing X7 SUV and 7 Series limousine. These vehicles are expected to receive significant updates later this year, aligning with BMW’s broader rollout of its “Neue Klasse” design language and advanced technologies.
“Alpina will talk not about sport but speed, comfort, and luxury,” says BMW R&D chief Joachim Post.
This philosophy signals a clear differentiation from BMW’s M performance division, which focuses on track-derived handling and outright speed. Alpina will lean into a more refined experience, prioritizing effortless power and opulent comfort.
Electric Alpina: A Possibility
When questioned about future electric Alpina models, Post stated that the brand is “technology-open,” suggesting that the next-generation vehicles may include both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric powertrains, given the 7 Series offers both options.
Distinct Identity: Not Competing with M
Despite operating under the BMW umbrella, Alpina will maintain its distinct identity as an “exclusive standalone brand.” It won’t directly compete with the M division; instead, it will fill a niche for customers who value luxury, speed, and customization over pure performance.
According to BMW’s design boss Oliver Heilmer, thorough analysis confirmed minimal overlap between Alpina’s and M’s design approaches. M remains focused on motorsport-inspired aesthetics, while Alpina will continue to emphasize elegance and individualization.
The revival of Alpina under BMW represents a strategic move to capture a higher-end luxury segment, offering customers a unique blend of performance and refinement that neither the standard BMW lineup nor the M division currently provides.
