Volkswagen continues to offer gasoline-powered sedans in China despite the growing electric vehicle market, unveiling the new Sagitar S – a Jetta-sized model priced at less than half the cost of an equivalent vehicle in the United States. This move highlights a significant pricing disparity, with the Chinese market receiving a modern, well-equipped sedan for around $11,600, while a base Jetta in the US starts at $23,995.

Dimensions and Design

The Sagitar S measures 4,702 mm (185.1 inches) in length, slightly shorter than both the Sagitar L and the US Jetta, yet maintains a comparable wheelbase. Its design adheres to VW’s signature clean lines, featuring a traditional sedan profile with contemporary touches like slim headlights and a full-width taillight design reminiscent of an Audi A5.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the Sagitar S boasts a tech-forward cabin that surpasses the aging Jetta in terms of modernity. It includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch infotainment touchscreen, along with 30-color ambient lighting and AI-powered voice recognition. The gear selector has been moved to the steering column to free up space, and Level 2 ADAS features are standard. The trunk offers a generous 555 liters (19.6 cu-ft) of storage – significantly more than the US Jetta.

The Sagitar S is powered by either a 110 hp 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine or a more powerful 160 hp turbocharged 1.5-liter engine. Both options rely on traditional combustion technology, aligning with VW’s “Oil & Electricity Co-advancement” strategy in China. The base model uses a six-speed automatic, while the turbo variant comes with a seven-speed DSG transmission.

Price and Competition

The launch price for the Sagitar S starts at ¥79,800 ($11,600) in China, making it an exceptionally affordable option. Even a fully loaded turbo model costs only $17,100. This pricing undercuts competitors like the Toyota Levin/Corolla, Nissan Sylphy, and domestic rivals such as the BYD Qin Plus and Geely Emgrand. The price difference with the US Jetta is striking – Americans pay more than double for a similar vehicle.
