Lucid Motors, the American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is set to expand into the UK market in 2027 with the launch of its new Cosmos model. This mid-size SUV is designed to compete directly with premium rivals like the BMW iX3 and Volvo EX60, marking a significant step in Lucid’s global expansion.
Strategic UK Entry: Right-Hand Drive First
Unlike earlier Lucid models, the Cosmos has been engineered from the outset to accommodate right-hand drive (RHD) configurations. This strategic decision avoids costly conversions required for the Air saloon and Gravity SUV, which currently aren’t slated for a UK release due to investment considerations.
Lucid’s European president, Lawrence Hamilton, explained that entering the UK with a RHD-ready vehicle maximizes market opportunity. “To engineer Air and Gravity for right-hand drive is a big investment, and there has to be a return on that investment. The volume opportunity really exists with the mid-size cars,” he stated.
New Platform, Compact Motors
The Cosmos will be built on an entirely new platform utilizing Lucid’s advanced 800V architecture. This platform features even more compact and efficient electric motors than the company’s current offerings, promising improved performance and range. Production will take place at Lucid’s recently completed facility in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Expanding the Lineup: Earth and Beyond
Following the Cosmos’s arrival, Lucid plans to introduce the Earth model in 2028. The Earth is designed for off-road adventures, catering to the growing demand for rugged, premium SUVs. A larger, more practical derivative of the Cosmos is also in development, further diversifying Lucid’s portfolio.
Slow European Start, Bigger Plans
Lucid’s initial European sales have been modest, primarily due to a gradual rollout through direct-sales stores. The Air saloon and Gravity SUV were intended as “proof of concept” vehicles, demonstrating the brand’s technological capabilities. With the Cosmos, Lucid aims to tap into the mass market, leveraging its advanced technology in a more accessible package.
Lucid’s focus on mid-size vehicles is not just about market volume; it’s about establishing a sustainable presence in key regions like the UK and Europe.
Hamilton believes the Cosmos and Earth models will appeal to a broad range of buyers, citing the continued success of adventure-themed luxury cars like Land Rovers and the Mercedes G-Class. The Cosmos’s launch in 2027 represents a pivotal moment for Lucid, signaling its commitment to a wider global reach and increased market share.
