Skoda Upgrades its Electric SUV Lineup with New Tech and Utility Features

Skoda has announced a significant suite of updates for its Elroq and Enyaq electric SUVs in the European and UK markets. These enhancements focus on three core areas: physical utility, advanced digital connectivity, and improved driver assistance systems.

Enhanced Utility and Power Capabilities

The updated models introduce practical hardware changes designed to improve the daily experience of EV owners:

  • The “Frunk”: A new 21-litre front luggage compartment has been added under the bonnet. Equipped with gas struts for easy access, Skoda suggests this space is ideal for storing charging cables, keeping them out of the main boot.
  • Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) Technology: The SUVs can now act as mobile power banks. Through an adapter or an internal 230V socket, drivers can power external electrical devices directly from the car’s battery.
  • One-Pedal Driving: A new regenerative braking mode (the “B” setting) allows for more efficient energy recovery. The stronger setting is powerful enough to bring the vehicle to a complete stop, and users can toggle this via the infotainment screen or steering wheel paddle shifters.

A Digital Overhaul

Moving away from older software architectures, Skoda is implementing the Volkswagen Group’s new Android-based user interface. This shift aims to make the cabin more intuitive and smartphone-like.

Key Software Features:

  • Improved Interface: A redesigned home screen with a grid layout, enhanced search functions, and better personalization.
  • App Ecosystem: Access to a new in-car app store and integrated “Powerpass” charging station functionality, including “Plug & Charge” capabilities.
  • Connectivity & Security: The MyŠkoda app now includes a stolen vehicle tracking function and a feature to flash the lights to locate the car in parking lots.
  • Digital Key: Compatible smartphones can now serve as digital keys, which can be shared with other users via the app.
  • Hardware Upgrades: New 25W wireless chargers with MagSafe compatibility and improved sensors for the Travel Assist 3.0 system, ensuring smoother automated driving responses.

Smarter Safety and Lighting

Skoda has also refined its driver monitoring and lighting systems. A new driver-monitoring camera has been installed to better detect fatigue or inattention. Additionally, the automatic headlight system has been upgraded to recognize “twilight” conditions—such as heavy overcast weather or dawn/dusk—to automatically activate daytime running lights and tail-lights.

The Australian Context: A Growing Digital Gap

While these updates are arriving in Europe in late June, their arrival in Australia remains uncertain. This delay highlights a broader trend within the Australian automotive market regarding connected services.

Historically, many Volkswagen Group brands in Australia—including Skoda, Volkswagen, and Cupra—have struggled to provide the same level of factory-backed, integrated digital connectivity found in Europe. Currently, only premium brands like Audi, Bentley, and Lamborghini offer robust, built-in connectivity from the factory in Australia.

“At this stage, final specifications for our upcoming model-year updates remain under review,” stated Skoda Australia, noting that they must balance market demand with price impacts and existing stock management.

To bridge this gap, brands like Cupra and Volkswagen are currently lobbying their global parent companies to establish a dedicated, factory-backed connected services network in Australia. In the interim, some brands have turned to third-party systems, such as Goconnect, to provide basic remote functions like battery monitoring and vehicle location.

Summary: Skoda’s latest updates bring much-needed utility and modern software to its electric SUV lineup, but a significant technological divide remains between these European releases and the current offerings available to Australian consumers.
