The logic is simple, but the execution is not always smooth. If a four-speed manual helps Trans Am owners get the most out of their road machine, logically a five-speed manual should produce better results. So for the 1983 model year, Pontiac made a five-speed manual standard. However, raw speed is not the only problem. The automatic transmission also got smarter, with three to four gear ratios and eventually a lock-up torque converter to increase highway efficiency and reduce slippage.
The Firebird’s physical footprint has grown slightly, as the new model is taller and wider than its predecessor. Under the hood, the V-8 engine has a little more power, and both the Trans Am and S/E cost more than $10,300. For those who drive long hours, comfort should not be an afterthought. Firebird buyers can choose Lear/Siegler multi-adjustable bucket seats with lumbar support and removable cushions to adjust to the driver’s body shape. All models also feature folding rear seats, a practical feature in cars that are increasingly being used for more than just weekend cruising.
Handling and driving comfort also attracted attention. Suspension improvements give the base and S/E Firebird a smoother ride, but also make them lighter and more responsive. But the Trans Am wears its performance on its sleeve, or rather, its hood. These models feature an eccentric power bubble integrated into the fresh air intake system to provide engine power. All Trans Ams come standard with front fender vents, wheel opening flanges, a rear spoiler and turbine cast aluminum wheels. These are not just aesthetic choices. A feature upgrade designed to deliver race car-like performance on the street.
In 1983, Pontiac also introduced 2 different special-specification transmissions to suit specific tastes. 1 is a black version with gold tape stripes and gold polished cast aluminum wheels. 2 is a white and gray model celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Daytona 500. The price of the レカロ package is equipped with a standard 305立方inch (5.0 liter) V-8 engine and a new 5-speed transmission, starting at $3,160. If the buyer chooses the more powerful “Crossfire” V8, the package price will rise to $3,610.
