VW’s Plug-In Return

4

Volkswagen is calling the dead back to life. Well. Sort of.

They are bringing plug-in hybrids back to Australia with the Tiguan and Tayron. Early signs show former customers walking through showroom doors. Again.

“Based on verbatim feedback… particularly metro dealerships… it’s quite strong,” says Arjun Nidigollu, head of product.

He admits the data isn’t fully in yet. Sales started May 1. You need three months to see trends. One month to clean the data. Patience is required.

These eHybrids mark the first time VW offers PHEVs in its core lineup. Before this. The technology was reserved for the expensive Touareg flagship.

The mechanics are standard group tech.

  • Engine : 1.5 TSI turbo petrol
  • Motor : 110kW or 85kW electric motor inside the DSG
  • Battery : 19.7 kWh net
  • Output : 150kW to 200kW combined

Range? Between 110 and 120 km electric driving. All front-wheel drive. No AWD here.

Volkswagen finally has rivals to fight. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. BYD Sealion 6. But VW prices higher. Usually.

Until June 30. 2026. Drive-away pricing kicks in.

The Tayron starts at $61,990.
The Tiguan starts at $63,990.

Wait. The larger Tayron is cheaper? Yes. Because it misses the standard Sound & Vision Package found in the Tiguan. A marketing trick. Maybe.

Even so. It beats the upcoming Toyota RAV4 PHEW which sits around $64,905.
It beats the related Skoda Kodiae PHEV which starts at $68,999.

Why rush? Hybrid sales are climbing.

The fuel crisis looms. Registrations up 6.2 percent year to date. Conventional hybrids sold nearly 65k units by April. PHEVs? Up nearly 77 percent this year. The growth is real. The demand is there.

VW needs this win.

In 2025. Volkswagen sales dropped 20 percent. Down to 28,975 units.
The brand fell to 14th place in Australia. A historic low.
Start of 2026? No improvement. Down 15.7 percent year-to-date. The core SUVs aren’t moving fast enough.

The hope is simple. Electrify the Tiguan and Tayron sales might climb.

Meanwhile the second-gen T-Roc is delayed. Coming in 2027. With mild hybrids. Twelve more months away.

The first drive reviews drop May 28.

Will it work.
Probably not for everyone.
