Imitated, Not Ignored

The Blue Streak was renamed the Custom Eight for 1933. The basic design stayed nearly identical. It spread to all “second-series” Grahams. Competitors panicked. Their styling began mimicking the Blue Streak. Graham claimed it was “the most imitated car on the road.”

They were right. Almost every American car in 1933 wore fender skirts. Below the Custom Eight sat a new Standard Six with an 113-inch wheelbase. And a Standard Eight on a 119-inch span. The answer arrived in 1939 in the form of Norman De Vaux. De Vaux was a man who had already failed with his own automotive venture, but he held a treasure trove: the tooling for the 1936-37 Cord 810 and 812 Westchester sedan. It was heavy, expensive, and perfect for someone trying to skip the R&D phase.

De Vaux approached the equally struggling Hupp Motors. The plan? Build a modified version of the Cord, but swap the front-wheel-drive layout for traditional rear-wheel drive. Graham saw an opening. He proposed building the bodies. The deal was simple: Graham’s company would handle the assembly, but only if they could sell the car under the Graham name with Graham’s own supercharged engine.

The result was a ghostly twin. The Graham Hollywood and the Hupp Skylark were mechanically identical. Only minor trim details separated them. Graham Hollywoods carried the company’s own 120-horsepower supercharged inline-six. It was faster. It cost more. Initial pricing sat at $1250. The Hupp Skylark, running on an unblown engine, started at $1145.

Both models shared a 115-inch wheelbase. That was 10 inches shorter than the parent Cord. Shorter. Lighter. More manageable for a budget-conscious buyer who still wanted Cord styling.

To fit the tall, supercharged engine under the Cord’s famously low hoodline, Graham’s engineers had to get creative. They offset the carburetor and air cleaner. It was a messy solution, but it worked.

The John Tjaarda Touch

The face of the car changed. The renowned designer John Tjaarda reworked the front end. It was handsome. Sophisticated.

The Hollywood featured a double grille, fully chromed. The headlamps were exposed bullets, protruding from nicely shaped front fenders. It looked like a Cord that had been on a diet and went to finishing school.

Tooling Trauma

But here’s the rub. The old Cord tooling was unsuitable for volume production. This was the same trap that had swallowed Cord.

The roof alone consisted of seven separate panels. Seven. That’s not a car part; that’s an assembly puzzle.

Joe Graham wanted to simplify. He wanted to streamline. But he got distracted. He agreed to take over Skylark production entirely. That meant a complete overhaul of the Graham assembly line. Overhauls cost money. They caused delays. They burned through the cash Graham was still desperately trying to save.

The Final Curtain

Hupp folded. They quit in the summer of 1940.

Graham kept going. He pushed into the 1941 model year. Desperation sets in. He added an unblown Hollywood. The price? Just $968. He cut the supercharged model to $1065. He bumped horsepower slightly on

The Post-Auto Pivot

Walking away from automobile manufacturing turned out to be the smartest financial move Graham ever made. While the industry struggled, Graham prospered during World War II, raking in $20 million from government defense contracts. It was a pivot that defined the rest of the company’s trajectory.

In 1944, Joseph W. Frazer bought the firm. The resulting Frazer car was branded as a “Graham-Paige” product for the 1946 and 1947 model years. Crucially, these vehicles were not rolled out of the old Dearborn plant. They were built at Kaiser’s Willow Run factory instead. This shift marked a tangible change in the company’s operational roots.

By early 1947, Graham-Paige had sold its remaining automotive interests to Kaiser-Frazer. The exit was complete. The company didn’t stop there. In 1952, it abandoned farm equipment production as well.

G-P then dropped “Motors” from its name. It became a closed investment corporation.

Where did the money go? The firm later operated Madison Square Garden. It owned several professional New York athletic teams. These ventures proved far more profitable than carmaking had ever been.
